LAREDO, Texas – Outfielder Hunter Church hit two home runs and third baseman Brooks Sunny hit another as University of Arkansas - Fort Smith Baseball earned the series win with an 8-3 victory at Texas A&M International Sunday.
Church led off the game with a homer to right, then after a Kinner Brasher double, Sunny delivered a one-out, two-run shot to give the Lions a quick 3-0 lead.
UAFS loaded the bases in both the second and third innings but was unable to add to its lead.
The Dustdevils then got two runs back in the fourth, forging a two-out rally with three consecutive hits.
Church would strike again in the top of the fifth by hitting his second home run of the game, this time a three-run dinger. He drove in first baseman Nolan Riley and shortstop Brenden Williams, who reached via a double and single, respectively.
TAMIU scored a run in the seventh to make it 6-3, but the Lions added three insurance runs in the eighth. Church led off the inning with his fourth hit of the game and would later score on an RBI single by second baseman Mac Moody. Brasher then scored on a sac fly by Sunny.
A day after the bullpen helped the Lions sweep a doubleheader, the Lions utilized a bullpen day to win the final game of the series. Dylan Parham earned the start for UAFS, and was credited with the win after tossing 3.2 innings, allowing two runs on three hits with a pair of strikeouts.
The bullpen pitched the final 5.1 innings and gave up just a single run. Braiden Partin worked 2.1 scoreless innings with three strikeouts, Jakob Petross pitched two innings and Dylan Rollins worked a scoreless ninth with two punchouts.
Church finished 4-for-5 with four RBIs and three runs scored while Brasher went 3-for-4 with two runs scored. Sunny drove in three on the afternoon, while Kaleb Shaffer, Cash Balentine and Riley all had two hits at the plate.
UAFS returns home to host Texas A&M-Kingsville for a four-game series February 25-27 at Crowder Field.
