Murrell, Wilson roar Lions past Mustangs

FORT SMITH, Ark. – Senior guard Matthew Wilson matched a season-high with 32 points as University of Arkansas – Fort Smith Men's Basketball bounced back with a 71-60 win over Western New Mexico Thursday at Gayle Kaundart Arena at the Stubblefield Center.

UAFS broke open what was a two-point game at the half by going on a 16-7 run over a six-minute stretch to open the second half. As UAFS stretched the lead to double digits, the Mustangs hung around by answering with a three of their own.

Cutting the deficit to four, the Lions quickly responded with a 7-1 run to extend the lead back to double digits.

The Lions grew the lead to 11 in the final minutes, with both Wilson and guard Courtney Murrell knocking down crucial shots.

In addition to Wilson's 32 points, Murrell added 15 points while also leading the team in rebounds (8), assists (6) and steals (3). Wilson had six boards, as well.

Guard Evan Anderson chipped in eight points, three rebounds and three assists while guard Drew Miller contributed six points and seven rebounds in a spot start.

The UAFS defense forced 16 turnovers, which led to a 20-9 advantage in points off turnovers.

Despite the close first half, the Lions led for 36:11 of game time, with the lead only changing hands twice.

Both teams were efficient from the floor, with the Mustangs shooting 45.2 percent and the Lions 46.0 percent. The Lions shot 61.5 percent in the second half.
