Wilson nets game-winner as Lions mount furious comeback

KINGSVILLE, Texas – Guard Matthew Wilson drained his second game-winning shot of the year Thursday as University of Arkansas – Fort Smith defeated Texas A&M – Kingsville, 63-60, on the road in Lone Star Conference action.

UAFS trailed 60-55 with less than a minute remaining and forced a turnover to go with a missed TAMUK free throw as it scored on its final four possessions of the game. Overall, the Lions closed on a 10-0 run over the final 1:46.

The Lions led 53-52 at the 6:28 mark before the Javelinas went on an 8-0 run over the next five minutes. Wilson snapped the run and started the close to the finish with a jumper with 1:33 on the clock.

UAFS led by as many as eight early in the first half before the game turned into a seesaw battle featuring 19 lead changes and five ties. The Javelinas held a 31-29 advantage at the half.

The Lions made just two triples in the contest but made up for it with a 19-for-23 effort from the free throw line. The Javelinas were just 7-for-13 from the line.

After scoring no second chance points in the first half, the Lions crashed the glass in the second half to finish with 12 second chance points. The Lions would win the battle on the boards, 38-31.

Guard Evan Anderson scored a game-high 18 points, with 14 coming in the first half. He also added five rebounds and two assists. Wilson would finish with 15 points.

Forward Chris Rollins and guard Courtney Murrell scored nine and eight points, respectively, while forward Justus Cooper added six points and seven boards off the bench.

This was the first win for the Lions in the four-game series history with the Javelinas and the Lions also broke the trend of only winning games by shooting better than 44.0 percent, as they shot 40.4 percent in the win.

Next up for the Lions is a meeting with Texas A&M International Saturday at 3 p.m. in Laredo, Texas.
