Lions stunned by Buffs in series finale

CANYON, Texas - University of Arkansas - Fort Smith saw a 14-9 lead after five innings disappear as No. 12 West Texas A&M came back to hand the Lions a 16-14 loss Sunday at Wilder Park.

Sophomore third baseman Brooks Sunny hit his second home run of the game to cap a four-run fifth inning, giving the Lions (5-10, 4-8 LSC) a 14-7 lead. UAFS had loaded the bases with no outs in the inning, and scored on a balk, sacrifice fly and groundout.

West Texas A&M quickly answered with two runs in the bottom half of the inning, then tripled in three more in the sixth.

The Buffs then rallied to tie with a two-run single in the eighth before hitting a game-winning two-run homer later in the frame.

UAFS trailed 4-0 after the first inning, but responded with three runs in the top of the second. Sunny led off the inning with a home run to right center, then back-to-back doubles by junior right fielder Hunter Church and senior catcher Dylan Hurt plated another run. Hurt would come around to score on a groundout.

After the Buffs scored two in the bottom of the second, the Lions took the lead with five runs in the top of the third. Sunny started the scoring with an RBI single, with Church and Hurt once again following with singles, as well.

Pinch hitter Jeb Sample walked in a run, and the Lions took the lead on an RBI groundout by junior second baseman Morgan Crenshaw. UAFS capped the inning with a double steal, resulting in Hurt stealing home.

The Lions added to their lead in the fourth on a sac fly by Church and another single by Church before extending the lead again in the fifth.

UAFS pounded out a season-high 16 hits, with Sunny and Hurt each going 4-for-5. Sunny drove in three and scored three times while Hurt scored twice in drove in two. Junior leftfielder Logan Easley finished off a strong weekend at the plate by going 3-for-4 with two runs and an RBI. Church batted 2-for-3 with two runs and an RBI.

Crenshaw made his first appearance on the mound of the season in relief, taking the loss after allowing four runs over 2.1 innings.

Next up for the Lions is a visit to Crowder Field by Eastern New Mexico March 19-20.
