FORT SMITH, Ark. – University of Arkansas – Fort Smith Baseball earned a doubleheader sweep over Eastern New Mexico Friday afternoon at Crowder Field, defeating the Greyhounds 9-7 and 7-3, respectively.
The Lions improved to 7-10, 6-8 LSC while the Greyhounds fell to 5-12, 4-12 LSC.
UAFS will go for the series sweep of the Greyhounds Saturday at 1 p.m.
UAFS 9, ENMU 7
The Lions overcame seven errors to hold on for the game one win. Of the seven runs for ENMU, only two were earned.
Right-hander Logan Grant tossed seven innings on the mound, allowing three runs on six hits. Just one run was earned and he struck out six to earn his first win of the year.
UAFS took the first lead of the game in the bottom of the fourth, when designated hitter Cooper Van Kooten drove in a run via a groundout.
The Greyhounds answered with two runs in the next half inning, but the next three innings saw the Lions out eight runs on the board.
Four runs came across in the bottom of the fifth, with all four runs being scored on an outcome other than a hit. Two runs scored on sac flies, including one by Van Kooten. The other two runs scored on a hit by pitch and wild pitch.
UAFS tallied two runs apiece in the sixth and seventh, with a two-run single by first baseman Nolan Riley in the sixth before once again scoring unconventionally on a walk and wild pitch in the seventh.
Eastern New Mexico rallied for two in the eighth when the first two batters reached via errors, and made things interesting by scoring two more in the ninth before reliever Coby Greiner struck out the final batter.
Greiner pitched the final two innings, allowing two runs, one earned, on two hits with three strikeouts.
Riley, leftfielder Logan Easley and second baseman Morgan Crenshaw all collected two hits, with Riley driving in three. Outfielders Cash Balentine and Hunter Church each scored twice.
UAFS 7, ENMU 3
The Lions scored four runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to break a 3-3 tie to complete the doubleheader sweep.
With runners on second and third, pinch hitter Trevor Brown drove in the game winning runs with a two-run infield single. Brown slapped the ball back to the pitcher, where it bounced off his glove into the area vacated by the second baseman.
Brown would later score on a wild pitch, and the Lions capped the four-run frame with an RBI single by Crenshaw.
The Greyhounds put the first two runners on base in the ninth before Greiner was called on for the second time to shut the door to earn his second save of the year. Greiner struck out two to get out of the jam.
UAFS struck first in the fourth inning, scoring on an RBI double by third baseman Brooks Sunny and RBI single by Van Kooten.
However, the Greyhounds battled back in the sixth, taking the lead with three runs on four hits, knocking starter Nico Sharp out of the game. Sharp allowed three runs on nine hits in 5.2 innings.
The Lions then tied the game in the bottom half of the inning on a sac fly by pinch hitter Baxter Mays.
Reliever Jakob Petross earned the win in relief, tossing 2.1 innings, striking out two and allowing just one hit.
Seven different players recorded a hit, with catcher Dylan Hurt collecting two hits.
