Buffs spoil Lions' rally with eighth inning run

CANYON, Texas – University of Arkansas – Fort Smith Baseball rallied back from an 8-1 deficit Saturday evening at West Texas A&M, but the Buffs were able to push across the winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning an 11-10 victory at Wilder Park.

The Lions (5-9, 4-7 LSC) trailed 8-1 after the Buffs scored five runs in the bottom of the third following a lengthy lightning delay. However, they slowly chipped away to tie the game in the top of the seventh.

UAFS first answered with four runs in the top of the fourth, highlighted by a two-run homer to left center by left fielder Logan Easley. Two more runs scored in the inning on a hit by pitch and a walk.

West Texas A&M made it a 10-5 ball game with a single run in the fourth and fifth innings. UAFS would get one run back in the sixth on a passed ball.

The seventh inning was unique for the Lions, as they scored four times to tie the game at 10-10 without recording a hit. UAFS walked five times in the frame, also scoring on a fielder's choice and a wild pitch. The seventh inning was the third time in four innings the Lions loaded the bases.

The Buffs then stole a run in the eighth, stealing third and scoring on an errant throw. That run would hold up as the game winner.

UAFS put the tying run on second in the ninth, but popped out to end the game.

Junior second baseman Morgan Crenshaw continued to heat up at the plate, going 3-for-4 with an RBI and three runs from the leadoff spot. Easley, junior first baseman Nolan Riley and freshman designated hitter Zach Slunder all recorded two hits. Riley drove in a team-high three runs.

Having loaded the bases in numerous innings, the Lions left 12 runners on base. They drew seven walks while being hit four times.

Freshman Braiden Partin was strong in relief, tossing 2.1 innings and allowing just one run. He allowed three hits while striking out two. Coby Greiner was stuck with the tough-luck loss, giving up one unearned run over two innings while striking out three.

Left Nico Sharp started for the Lions, allowing three runs on four hits in two innings before the lightning delay.

Due to the delay, game three of the series was pushed back to Sunday with a noon first pitch.
