FORT SMITH, Ark. – Freshman forward Justus Cooper hit a pair of free throws with five seconds left, as University of Arkansas - Fort Smith Men's Basketball upset No. 13 Dallas Baptist University 72-70 Sunday evening at the Stubblefield Center.
Cooper was fouled after grabbing a defensive rebound and calmly knocked down both free throws in a one-and-one situation.
DBU (13-3, 12-3 LSC) had one final chance at the buzzer, with the shot bouncing off the front iron.
Tied at 68, the Patriots took the lead on a pair of free throws by guard Chandler Jacobs with 56 seconds remaining. The Lions (4-9, 4-9 LSC) answered on the other end when freshman guard Payton Brown drained a pair from the line, as well, knotting things back up at 70.
The UAFS defense then made a stand as the shot clock wound down, with Cooper snagging the board and drawing the foul.
UAFS trailed 66-63 with just under four minutes left, but a Brown layup cut the lead to one. On the next possession, senior forward Chris Rollins showed off his range once again, burying his second triple of the game for a 68-66 advantage.
Dallas Baptist continued the back and forth game with a tying layup, scoring 32 of their 38 second half points in the paint. UAFS held DBU to just 1-for-12 from beyond the arc in the second half and just 19.2 percent for the game.
DBU jumped out to a 12-2 lead, but the Lions slowly chipped away with runs of 7-2 and 10-4 to pull within 24-21. UAFS would soon use a 10-0 run with six points from Cooper to take its first lead and extend it to 31-26 with five and a half minutes left in the first half.
UAFS would take a 34-32 lead into the break, and the teams traded baskets for nearly the entire half, as the lead never grew above four points.
Brown led all scorers with 25 points while shooting 5-for-9 from beyond the arc. He also added six rebounds. Rollins added 16 points and seven rebounds, while senior guard Matthew Wilson tallied 10 points, four rebounds and five assists, all in the first half. Cooper finished with eight points and eight rebounds.
The Lions held a 36-28 advantage on the boards, grabbing 10 offensive rebounds for a 13-8 margin in second chance points.
After not shooting a free throw in the first half, UAFS was 7-for-9 at the charity stripe in the second half.
Both teams shot 48 percent from the field.
With one week left in the regular season, UAFS will travel to Oklahoma Christian Tuesday at 7 p.m. before wrapping up the week February 26-27 against St. Edward's at the Stubblefield Center.
