Wilson scores 32 to power Lions past No. 3 Buffs

FORT SMITH, Ark. – Guard Matthew Wilson scored 23 of his 32 points in the second half as University of Arkansas - Fort Smith Men's Basketball upset No. 3 West Texas A&M, 75-69, Friday at Gayle Kaundart Arena at the Stubblefield Center.

This was the first win for the Lions in three tries against the Buffaloes and marks the second straight win against a ranked opponent.

Tied at the half, UAFS trailed by as many as eight with 13:02 left. The Lions finally broke through with five minutes left, going on a 10-0 run to turn a 58-56 deficit into a 66-58 lead. Wilson scored seven of the 10 points in the run.

The Buffs would cut the lead to four with just over a minute remaining, but the Lions sealed the game with five free throws.

UAFS got off to a hot start, hitting six of its first seven shots and leading 18-9 after the first six minutes. West Texas then used a 12-2 run to take a 21-20 lead before the teams traded the lead six times prior to going into the half tied at 33.

Wilson's 32 points leave him just nine points shy of reaching 1,000 points for his UAFS career. He shot 8-for-18 from the floor, including 6-for-8 from beyond the arc and 10-for-15 at the free throw line. He also added five assists and four rebounds.

Guard Evan Anderson continued to make his impact felt beyond the box score, holding WTAMU leading scorer Larry Wise to just five points. He scored seven points to go with seven assists, five rebounds and four steals without committing a turnover.

Forward Chris Rollins tallied 10 points and seven rebounds.

The Lions improved to 7-0 when shooting at least 45.0 percent, shooting 46.2 percent for the game. They shot 56.3 percent from three-point range.

UAFS held a wide margin at the foul line, shooting 18-for-28 while the Buffs went just 3-for-6.

Up next for the Lions is a home contest Sunday at 4 p.m. against Cameron University at the Stubblefield Center.
