FORT SMITH, Ark. – University of Arkansas – Fort Smith Men's Basketball held off a second half Cameron rally to improve to 2-0 in Lone Star Conference play, defeating the Aggies, 74-63, Sunday at Gayle Kaundart Arena at the Stubblefield Center.
With leading scorer Matthew Wilson limited, guard Courtney Murrell stepped up to deliver his best game as a Lion, scoring 20 points on 8-for-10 shooting while adding three steals and two assists. Murrell connected on his first six shots from the field.
After a back-and-forth first seven minutes, the Lions took the lead on a Daryl McElrath layup, and would not relinquish that lead for the remainder of the game.
They led by as many as 13 in the first half and took a 32-28 lead into the break. The Lions briefly extended the lead back to double digits before the Aggies used an 11-2 run over a four-and-a-half-minute stretch to pull within 53-52.
But forward Chris Rollins was not going to let his team lose. He scored the next six points and had 12 of his 17 points in the final seven minutes.
UAFS pushed the lead out to 72-56 in the final minute, capped by a breakaway dunk by Rollins. Rollins finished with a double-double of 17 points and 12 rebounds.
Guard Evan Anderson had his second consecutive game of seven assists and no turnovers, while also adding 11 points and two blocks.
Forwards Alex Brogdon and David Ekezie added eight and seven points, respectively.
UAFS secured 10 offensive rebounds in the contest and outscored the Aggies, 15-10, in second chance points. After shooting just 37.0 percent in the first half, the Lions shot 51.7 percent in the second half to finish at 44.6 percent.
A tall task awaits the Lions next, as they visit top-ranked Lubbock Christian Thursday.
