COMMERCE, Texas – University of Arkansas – Fort Smith Men's Basketball had yet another game come down to the final possession, but came up short in a 68-65 defeat at Texas A&M – Commerce Monday afternoon.
UAFS held a 29-26 lead at the break before Commerce opened the second half with a 12-4 run. A five-point game with eight minutes to go, Commerce grew the lead to as many as 14 points.
The Lions responded with a 10-0 run, fueled by six points by guard Matthew Wilson, to pull within 63-59 with just over two minutes remaining.
UAFS then pulled within one when guard Courtney Murrell banked in a floater with under 10 seconds left. After the teams traded free throws over three straight possessions, Murrell's half-court heave at the buzzer was unable to convert.
Wilson led UAFS with 28 points and made all six of the Lions' three pointers, while Murrell was the only other Lion in double figures with 11 points. Forward Chris Rollins added nine points with seven rebounds.
Commerce outshot UAFS 54.2 percent to 46.4 percent, and had a seven-point advantage at the free throw line.
UAFS will return to action after the holiday break to take on West Texas A&M December 31 at Gayle Kaundart Arena at the Stubblefield Center.
