FORT SMITH, Ark. – Midwestern State scored on an offensive putback with 12 seconds left to stun University of Arkansas – Fort Smith Men's Basketball, 63-62, Friday at Gayle Kaundart Arena at the Stubblefield Center.
Guard Matthew Wilson had an opportunity to hit the game winner on the ensuing possession, but had his shot blocked in the paint as time expired.
A defensive slugfest saw the teams shoot near identical percentages, with the Mustangs at 43.4 percent and the Lions at 43.8 percent.
UAFS led by six with four minutes remaining and again by four with less than two minutes left. However, the Mustangs would drain a three and take the lead with 42 seconds left on a baseline jumper.
The lead changed hands three times in the final minute.
The Lions had the largest lead of the game at 10 points at the 11:45 mark of the second half, but the Mustangs tied the game at 46 with a 12-2 run over a three-minute stretch.
The Mustangs controlled the paint, outscoring the Lions 34-22 in that category. Midwestern State also had a 37-24 advantage on the glass.
Wilson led the Lions with 19 points, while guard Evan Anderson added 15. Anderson and Wilson combined for nine of the 12 Lions assists, with Anderson distributing four dimes.
The Lions return to action December 16 at UT Tyler.
