Lions dish out 26 assists in win at Harding

SEARCY, Ark. – Guard Matthew Wilson scored 30 points and made seven threes as University of Arkansas – Fort Smith Men's Basketball shot 50.0 percent from the floor in an 80-61 nonconference win at Harding University Saturday.

Wilson scored 30 points for the third time in his UAFS career and was 11-for-22 from the field, including 7-for-12 from beyond the arc. He also added seven assists, four rebounds and three steals.

UAFS trailed 15-7 after the first five minutes, but used a 23-7 run over the next nine minutes to take a 30-22 lead. The Lions would briefly get the lead to double digits before settling for a 41-35 lead at the break.

The Lions would never let the Bisons back in the game, opening the second half with a 15-2 spurt, which included a 13-0 run. UAFS extended its lead to as many as 24 late in the game, with the Bisons never pulling within single digits.

Great ball movement was the key to the Lions' hot shooting as they dished out a season-high 26 assists on 32 baskets while turning it over just eight times. In addition to Wilson's seven assists, guard Evan Anderson dished out a team-best eight assists. Guard Courtney Murrell added four assists.

UAFS was also 11-for-20 from three-point range for 55 percent. It was 32-for-64 overall.

Forward Chris Rollins tallied 14 points, while Anderson scored eight. Three others scored six points apiece.

Defensively, the Lions held the Bisons to 38.6 percent shooting and forced 14 turnovers.

The Lions return home Monday to host Southwestern Christian at 7 p.m. at Gayle Kaundart Arena at the Stubblefield Center. The UAFS Basketball Coaches show will be broadcast on KHGG-FM 103.5 from 6-7 p.m. at the Stubblefield Center prior to tipoff.
