FORT SMITH, Ark. – Guard Matthew Wilson drained a game-winning three pointer as time expired to give University of Arkansas - Fort Smith Men's Basketball an 81-80 overtime win Saturday over Henderson State at Gayle Kaundart Arena at the Stubblefield Center.
The Reddies took the lead with 11 seconds to go on a layup, setting up the final possession for the Lions. Guard Evan Anderson brought the ball up the court, missing a potential winner. But as has been the case this season, UAFS got an offensive rebound.
Forward Chris Rollins pulled in the initial board, but had his shot blocked on the put-back attempt. The ball landed right into the hands of forward Braden Boyer, who found the open Wilson just before time expired.
UAFS trailed by four with five minutes remaining but scored on back-to-back possessions to take a 66-65 lead. After extending the lead to three, HSU tied the game at 72 with just under a minute remaining.
Neither team was able to capitalize in the final seconds, forcing overtime.
The game featured 15 ties and nine lead changes, as neither team ever led by double digits. UAFS led for just nine minutes in the contest, compared to 27 minutes led for Henderson State.
Both teams did most of their damage in the paint, with the Lions outscoring the Reddies, 40-34, inside the lane. UAFS had 66 of 81 points scored by starters, whereas the Reddies had 45 bench points.
Both Rollins and Wilson eclipsed the 20-point mark, with Rollins scoring 25 and Wilson 24. Rollins also had a team-high eight rebounds. Wilson was just 2-for-9 from beyond the arc prior to his final attempt.
Reserve forward David Ekezie joined the duo in double figures with 11 points and three rebounds.
Anderson had an all-around game, scoring eight points to go with seven assists, six rebounds, a block, and a steal. Boyer tallied four points and seven boards.
UAFS looks to win its third in a row next Saturday, November 29, at Harding University.
