Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Balanced effort leads Lions to second straight win

FORT SMITH, Ark. – Senior guard Matthew Wilson scored five straight points to break a 60-60 tie with two and a half minutes remaining as University of Arkansas – Fort Smith Men's Basketball picked up its second consecutive win, 72-67, over visiting Texas A&M-Commerce.

Wilson drained his only three of the game to give UAFS (2-3, 2-3 LSC) a 63-60 lead and then scored on a driving layup to complete a 7-0 run. The Lions extended the lead to six before A&M-Commerce (2-3, 1-2 LSC) cut it to two, but the Lions converted 3-of-4 at the line to fend off any final comeback attempt.

Wilson played the role of distributor, dishing out eight assists. UAFS assisted on 16-of-23 baskets en route to shooting 46.0 percent from the floor. They had 11 assists on 13 makes in the first half.

UAFS led by as many as 14 at the 12-minute mark of the second half, but went cold from the floor as Commerce erased the deficit to regain the lead at 58-57. A dunk by senior forward Chris Rollins briefly gave the lead back to UAFS, before Commerce converted on the other end.

A free throw by freshman forward Justus Cooper tied the game at 60 before Wilson came up with two clutch buckets.

Rollins recorded his second double-double on the year, tallying 13 points and 10 rebounds. Freshman guard Payton Brown and sophomore guard Evan Anderson each scored 15 points for the Lions, both going 4-for-9 from the field and converting three triples each. Wilson added 10 points while freshman guard Terrell Kabala scored eight.

The defense held Commerce to 38.7 percent shooting, including just 28.1 percent from beyond the arc.

As about as even a game can get, the game featured 14 lead changes. Each team scored 17 points off turnovers and had 28 points in the paint, while UAFS held the slightest of margins on the glass, 37-36.

UAFS will travel to Commerce Sunday to complete the home-and-home series, with tipoff scheduled for 4 p.m.
