COMMERCE, Texas – Freshman guard Payton Brown scored 21 points, but it wasn't enough as University of Arkansas – Fort Smith Men's Basketball fell 77-61 Sunday evening at Texas A&M-Commerce to split the weekend series.
Brown has seen his scoring improve in each of his four games this season. Senior forward Chris Rollins had another double-double, scoring 19 points to go with 10 rebounds.
Rollins converted an and-1 opportunity on the opening possession of the game, but that would be the only lead UAFS (2-4, 2-4 LSC) would have. Rollins scored seven of the team's first nine points, including an emphatic one-handed jam off an inbounds play.
A jumper by senior guard Matthew Wilson pulled the Lions within 21-17 halfway through the opening period, but A&M-Commerce (3-3, 2-2 LSC) responded with a 10-0 run over the next three minutes.
Commerce led by as many as 22 as the Lions were never able to trim the deficit to single digits.
Each team shot 41 percent from the floor, with UAFS winning the battle on the boards, 38-33. UAFS struggled from beyond the arc, going just 1-for-12. UAFS scored 38 points in the paint.
Turnovers were costly for the Lions, as well, as A&M-Commerce forced 22 while only turning the ball over nine times. Commerce turned those into a 23-8 advantage in points off turnovers.
Wilson joined Rollins and Brown in double figures with 10 points, and was one of three players with three assists.
UAFS continues conference play Thursday at Cameron University.
