After earning a big win on the road against UT Permian Basin, UAFS men's basketball team has lost the first game of the conference homestand this week against Lubbock Christian Chaparrals by the score of 67-69. Coach
Jim Boone's crew was led by
Brian Halums with 38 points and 12 rebounds but that was not enough to defeat a, traditionally, very tough opponent.
At the conclusion of the game, coach
Jim Boone said, "We are not into moral victories, but what an effort by our guys. I said it earlier in the week, we are not always pretty but we are gritty and tonight was a
grit and grind game. Couldn't be more proud of our guys for tonight's effort."
The Lions are now 10-13 overall on the season, 6-11 in conference play, and 4-6 in all-time series against the Chaps.
Offensively, the Lions scored 67 points on 46.4 percent shooting from the field, 26.1 percent from downtown and 75 percent from the free throw line. UAFS was led in scoring by Halums (38) and
Charles Botchway (11) while
Matthew Wilson added seven points. The Lions scored 34 points in the paint and got only a 6 point boost from the bench. UAFS also distributed the ball well with 13 assists, led by
Evan Anderson (5).
On the defensive end, the Lions allowed their opponent 69 points in the game on 51 percent shooting from the field, 55.6 percent from the three point line and 81.8 percent from the charity stripe. UAFS grabbed 39 rebounds as a team (15-24) and were led by Halums (12) and
Matt Morgan (7). The Lions forced 12 turnovers and scored 12 points off those while also recording four steals, led by Halums (3).
