UAFS has a new single-season home run king.

Justus crushed a fifth-inning grand slam in the opening game of Sunday’s Heartland Conference doubleheader against the No. 11 St. Mary’s Rattlers to lead UAFS to a 14-5 win at Dickson Stadium.

Justus’ grand slam, which highlighted a game-breaking, seven-run outburst by the Diamond Lions in the fifth inning, was the senior’s ninth home run. He surpassed the former NCAA Division II-era, single-season, school record of eight home runs set by former UAFS first baseman Gordon Miller – a mark Justus tied last week in the series against the University of Texas of the Permian Basin.

It was Justus’ only hit during the opening game – he was 1 for 4 with four RBIS, a walk and two runs scored – but his big blow accounted for one third of the Diamond Lions’ runs in the game and was one of their three extra-base hits.
