Shohn Doty begins his 10th season as associate head baseball coach at UAFS.
At UA Fort Smith, Doty assists the head baseball coach with on-field coaching duties and day-to-day operations of the program and also serves as pitching coach and recruiting coordinator.
A native of Springdale, Ark., Doty is a 1987 graduate of Springdale High School. After graduation, Doty played two seasons at Crowder College, where he set the school record for doubles (31) as a sophomore.
Doty went on to play two seasons at Arkansas Tech University, where he posted 17 wins and earned NAIA District 17 honors while playing for current UA Fort Smith coach Dale Harpenau.
Doty served as Harpenau’s pitching coach at Arkansas Tech for one season (1992-93). His Wonder Boys staff led the conference in ERA and had the lowest walks-per-innings-pitched, and two of his pitchers were drafted.
After one season as a graduate assistant coach at Arkansas (1994-95) and an assistant at Pratt Community College (1995-96), Doty was pitching coach at Indiana State University for two seasons (1996-98), where he worked with pitchers and catchers and coordinated the program’s junior college recruiting.
Doty went on to become assistant coach at the University of North Carolina-Wilmington for three seasons (1998-01), where he was pitching coach and recruiting coordinator. His Seahawks staff led the conference in ERA each season and was No. 3 in the nation with a 3.20 ERA in 1999.
Prior to joining the UA Fort Smith Athletics Department, Doty was pitching coach and recruiting coordinator for three seasons at Old Dominion University (2001-2004). His Monarch’s staff set several school records, including fewest walks allowed in a season, most strikeouts in a season and fewest stolen bases allowed in a season.
More than 20 of Doty’s former pitchers have either played or are playing professionally, including former No. 2 overall draft pick Justin Verlander of the Detroit Tigers.
Doty is married to wife, Anissa, and the couple has two children, Blake and Bethany.
