TOPEKA, Kan. – University of Arkansas – Fort Smith Volleyball battled at No. 15 Washburn Friday night, but came up short, 19-25, 22-25, 21-25 against the Ichabods.
The Lions had more than double the blocks of the Ichabods at 8-3, but Washburn outhit the Lions, .287 to .179.
UAFS rallied back to within two at 18-16 in the opening set after being down seven but the Ichabods answered with a 3-0 run before taking set one.
The Lions took an early lead in set two before Washburn used a 4-0 run to take an 11-10 lead. The teams traded points until 22-all when Washburn scored the final three points of the set for a 2-0 lead.
Once again the Lions took a 3-0 lead to start the third set only to see the Ichabods tie it at 15-15. Tied again at 21-21, Washburn closed out the match with four straight points.
Lydia Pitts had a team-high 11 kills for the Lions while Codi Jackson added nine and Aspen Olson six. Mayli Whetter had 15 assists while Sarah LaForge had 10 in her first extended action of the season.
Defensively, Abbey Jackson tallied 13 digs while Pitts and Whetter each had 10. Emily Parker had five blocks for the Lions and Elza Jansone four.
UAFS is back in action September 30 at 6 p.m. at Nebraska-Kearney.
