Sweat, Young homer in series at Fort Hays State

HAYS, Kan. - University of Arkansas - Fort Smith Baseball is still searching for its first MIAA win of the season as the Lions were swept in a three-game series at Fort Hays State.

The Tigers took game one, 15-5, before taking game two, 5-1. Fort Hays then won the series finale, 10-5.

UAFS is back at Crowder Field for its final nonconference game Tuesday at 2 p.m. against Oklahoma Baptist.

The Tigers scored in each of the final six frames in the opening game of the series.

The Lions scored first on an RBI double by catcher Cody Walkingstick in the second, but the Tigers responded with three runs in each the second and third innings. UAFS tallied single tallies in the third and fourth.

UAFS scored twice in the sixth, including a solo home run by outfielder JJ Young to cut the lead to 10-5, but the Tigers then scored twice in the bottom half and three times in the seventh.

Walkingstick and infielder Quinton Borders and Layne Sweat all finished with two hits. Steffan Fak started on the mound, allowing six runs on eight hits over 3.1 innings.

The Lions held the Tigers to just two runs through the first seven innings but were unable to come up with a timely hit in game two.

Jett Frazier started on the mound and allowed two runs on four hits with three strikeouts over 3.1 innings, while Tommy Kelsey threw 4.1 innings in relief. Kelsey had tossed four scoreless innings before the Tigers scored three unearned runs in the bottom of the eighth in a 2-1 game.

The Lions took the lead in the opening inning, as outfielder Wyatt Pierce walked, stole second and then scored on an error.

Fort Hays tied the game in the third on a home run and then took the lead in the bottom of the fourth.

UAFS scored three times in the ninth but the deficit was too much to overcome in the series finale.

After Fort Hays scored in the opening frame, UAFS tied it at 1-1 on a solo home run by infielder Layne Sweat in the third. The Tigers then scored two runs in each of the fourth through six innings for a 7-1 advantage.

The Lions scored once in the eighth but the Tigers then added three runs in the bottom half of the frame.

In the top of the ninth, the Lions loaded the bases with one out before Sweat drove in a run with an RBI single. Outfielder Connor Earleywine then walked in a run and Borders drove in another with a sacrifice fly.

UAFS reloaded the bases with a walk but ended the game with a fielder's choice. Sweat went 3-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored while designated hitter Dylan Herriage added two hits. Earleywine finished with two RBIs.

Aden Almeida started on the mound for the Lions, allowing four runs on six hits with three punchouts over 4.2 innings.
