FORT SMITH, Ark. - University of Arkansas - Fort Smith Women's Basketball continued its strong offensive season Thursday with an 88-80 defeat of Missouri Western at Gayle Kaundart Arena at the Stubblefield Center.
Guard Zyniah Thomas led the charge in the fourth quarter, as the Lions outscored the Griffons, 27-18, in the final frame. Thomas scored on five of six possessions in the last five minutes and scored 12 of her 16 points in the fourth quarter.
The Lions trailed by six, 75-69, with 5:15 left before a layup by forward Sinetra Jones and the takeover by Thomas to eventually tie the game at 77 with 3:08 remaining. After a free throw by guard Anna Trusty gave the Lions the lead, Thomas made two more baskets before finding Jones again for a seven-point advantage.
Trusty tied her career high with 27 points, shooting 8-for-12 from the floor and 11-for-12 from the charity stripe while adding five rebounds, a block and a steal. Thomas went 8-for-14 from the field and added seven boards and three assists.
While the Griffons shot 45 threes and only converted 26.7 percent, the Lions attacked the basket and went 27-for-33 from the line. UAFS outscored MWSU in points in the paint, 40-30. The Lions finished at 49.2 percent shooting to 39.4 percent for the Griffons.
Guard Morgan Browning went 6-for-6 from the line and added 13 points, while Jones and guard Hannah Boyett each contributed eight points. Jones had a team-high eight rebounds.
UAFS will wrap up its home slate Saturday at 1 p.m. against Northwest Missouri State at the Stubblefield Center.
