Lions outlast Ichabods, 83-81

FORT SMITH, Ark. – Guard Anna Trusty poured in 25 points as University of Arkansas - Fort Smith Women's Basketball held on for an 83-81 win over Washburn Thursday evening at the Stubblefield Center.

The Lions built a 13-point lead at 59-46 in the third quarter after using a 16-6 run out of the locker room. However, the Ichabods cut the lead in half before the end of the frame as the Lions took a 67-60 lead to the fourth.

Washburn opened the fourth on a 10-0 run before ethe Lions answered with a layup by Trusty. The Lions regained the lead for good when Trusty hit a three to take a 75-72 advantage with 4:24 left.

A layup by guard Morgan Browning gave the Lions a five-point advantage with 2:25 left before the Ichabods made it a one-point game with 16 seconds remaining. After splitting a pair of free throws, the Lions got one more defensive stop to close out the win.

The Lions shot 47.5 percent from the floor in the win, including over 50 percent in both the first and third quarters. Trusty finished 10-for-14 from the field and 5-for-6 from beyond the arc.

Four others finished in double figures, with Browning adding 16 points and guard Zyniah Thomas contributing 14 points, seven rebounds, five assists and three steals. Guards Daijah Smith and Telisha Brown scored 12 and 13 points, respectively.

UAFS corralled 11 steals in the game, leading to a 20-11 advantage in points off turnovers.

The Lions look to continue their strong run at home Saturday at 1 p.m. against Central Missouri at the Stubblefield Center.
