FORT SMITH, Ark. - University of Arkansas - Fort Smith Women's Basketball fell short in its second straight overtime game this week, as the Lions fell to No. 6 Pittsburg State, 92-87, Saturday at the Stubblefield Center.
The Lions led, 75-74 with 33 seconds left before the Gorillas hit a three to go up by two on the ensuing possession. Next time down the floor, guard Telisha Brown converted a driving layup to tie the game but missed the potential game-winning free throw.
Pitt State took the lead early in the overtime period before a layup by guard Anna Trusty put the Lions ahead, 83-82. With Pitt State ahead, 86-85, with a minute left, the Gorillas iced the game by converting 6-of-8 at the free throw line.
UAFS had a six-point lead early in the first quarter of a game that featured 10 ties and 17 lead changes. Pitt State then opened up a seven-point lead in the third before the Lions went on a 12-4 run to take a 50-49 lead.
Guard Anna Trusty led the Lions with a double-double of 20 points and 12 rebounds while also collecting three steals. She finished shooting 9-for-16 from the floor. Forward Sinetra Jones added 15 points and seven boards and Brown tallied 13 points and five boards. Guard Zyniah Thomas contributed 10 points and four assists.
UAFS finished shooting 45.3 percent from the floor and outscored the Gorillas, 54-36 in points in the paint.
The Lions next visit Nebraska-Kearney February 6 at 5:30 p.m.
