FORT SMITH, Ark. - University of Arkansas - Fort Smith Women's Basketball held Drury to 34.4 percent shooting but the Lions came up short, 49-47, to the visiting Panthers in the nonconference finale at the Stubblefield Center Saturday.
The Lions held the Panthers to single digits in both the second and third quarters, shooting 14.3 and 21.4 percent, respectively. After Drury led by six at the end of the first, the Lions closed the first half on a 10-2 run to take a 26-23 lead into the break.
Neither team scored in the first three minutes of the third before the Lions extended their lead to seven and took a 34-31 lead to the fourth.
UAFS led 39-35 when the Panthers regained the lead with a 7-0 run. The Lions cut the deficit to one twice in the final minutes on a three by guard Senese Rainey and a layup by forward Marie Rose Priscilla Wemba.
After Drury split a pair of free throws in the final seconds, the Lions had a chance to tie or take the lead at the buzzer, but the driving layup rimmed out as time expired.
Guard Haleigh Jackson was the lone Lion in double figures with 12 points and seven rebounds, while Rainey and guard Caiyiah Smith each had seven points. Guard Telisha Brown scored nine points in her first game back in a month.
Additionally, the Lions held the Panthers to 22.2 percent from beyond the arc and doubled up Drury in points off turnovers, 8-4.
The Lions will return to MIAA play January 1 at 1:30 p.m. against Pittsburg State at the Stubblefield Center.
