FORT SMITH, Ark. - University of Arkansas - Fort Smith Volleyball closed out its home slate Saturday, falling to Pittsburg State in three sets, 21-25, 23-25, 22-25.
Pitt State started the match on a 7-2 run but the Lions roared right back with a 9-1 burst to take a 13-10 lead. The game of runs continued as PSU then scored four straight and had a 6-1 run to regain a 21-16 lead. UAFS pulled back within two before the Gorillas closed out the set.
Set two once again saw the Gorillas jump out to an early lead before the Lions clawed their way back to within one at 15-14. UAFS eventually tied the set at 23-23 with three straight kills, but a pair of attack errors gave Pitt State at 2-0 lead.
UAFS scored the first four points of set three before the Gorillas came back to tie the set at 13-13, when the Lions used another 4-0 run. However, the Gorillas scored 11 of the next 13 points to put the match away.
Right-side hitter Morgan Creer led UAFS with 10 kills while middle Crystal Smith had nine and outside hitter Lydia Pitts had eight. Middle Jacia Hayes hit .500 with six kills in her final home match.
Pitts led the Lion defense with 18 digs while libero Abby Jackson added 12. Setter Scarlette Young had a double-double with 17 assists and 10 digs. Setter Trinity Funderburk added 10 assists.
In a battle of two of the top blocking teams in the MIAA, the Lions tallied 10 rejections to nine for the Gorillas. Smith led the Lions with seven blocks while Pitts had five and Creer four.
UAFS begins the final week of the regular season at Emporia State at 6 p.m. on November 14.
