FORT SMITH, Ark. – Turnovers proved costly Wednesday as University of Arkansas - Fort Smith Women's Basketball dropped a 75-69 decision to Arkansas Tech at the Stubblefield Center.
The Lions turned the ball over 30 times, leading to a 38-18 edge in points off turnovers for Arkansas Tech as well as a 19-8 advantage in fast break points.
UAFS raced out to a 7-0 lead to start the game before the Golden Suns pulled ahead, 15-14. Trailing 23-21 at the end of the first quarter, UAFS started the second on an 8-0 run before settling for a 43-39 lead at halftime.
The Lions led by as many as nine at 57-48 late in the third quarter, but the Golden Suns got it down to three in the opening minutes of the fourth before the game was tied at 60 with 5:36 left.
Arkansas Tech took the lead with a 7-2 run and led 71-64 before the Lions closed to back within two with 40 seconds left on a three-point play by guard Telisha Brown.
However, the Goldens Suns converted at the line and the Lions were unable to extend the game. Arkansas Tech outscored the Lions, 23-10, in the fourth quarter.
Guard Keytonna Ross and forward Marie Rose Priscilla Wemba each led the Lions with 13 points while Wemba pulled down a team-high nine rebounds. Brown tallied 12 points and six assists for the Lions.
The Lions hit the road for the first time this season Saturday at 1 p.m. as they visit Southeastern Oklahoma State.
