Lions come up short in double overtime thriller

FORT SMITH, Ark. - University of Arkansas - Fort Smith Women's Basketball came up on the wrong end of a double overtime thriller Thursday, falling 103-96 to Missouri Southern at the Stubblefield Center.

UAFS (13-6, 7-3 MIAA) held a 71-61 lead with 6:49 left in the fourth before Missouri Southern (14-8, 6-4 MIAA) went on an 11-2 run to pull within one with 2:30 remaining. The Lions then took a 76-74 lead with just over a minute remaining before each team traded threes. MSSU then tied the game with 20 seconds left to send the game to overtime.

In the first overtime period, UAFS built a four-point lead before Missouri Southern went on a 7-0 run to lead by three with six seconds left. Guard Zyniah Thomas then raced up the court and found guard Telisha Brown for a three at the buzzer to force a second overtime.

Missouri Southern started the second frame on a 9-2 run with the Lions getting back within four in the final seconds before MSSU closed out the game at the free throw line.

MSSU had started the game on a 10-0 run but UAFS roared back to take a 17-15 lead at the end of the first. UAFS then led 43-39 at the halftime break.

Both teams shot the ball well with each finishing with 44 points in the paint. UAFS finished at 47.4 percent overall and 43.5 percent from three.

Guard Morgan Browning led six Lions in double figures with 22 points with Brown adding 16 points and four assists off the bench. Guard Daijah Smith added 13 points and seven boards while forward Sinetra Jones had 12 points and seven boards.

Guards Zyniah Thomas and Hannah Boyett each scored 10 points. Thomas led the Lions with four steals defensively.

Up next the Lions play host to No. 6 Pittsburg State at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Stubblefield Center.
