Lions defeat Emporia State to extend win streak to five games

EMPORIA, Kan. – University of Arkansas – Fort Smith Women's Basketball extended its winning streak to five games as the Lions defeated Emporia State, 87-68, Sunday afternoon at White Auditorium.

The Lions are averaging 87.3 points in their last four games.

UAFS shot 47.2 percent from the field and led for over 39 minutes of game action. All 11 players that saw action recorded a point.

The Lions led 20-17 at the end of the first quarter and then shot 55.6 percent in the second as they extended the lead to double figures to lead 45-32 at the break.

The Hornets then cut the lead to two early in the third quarter before the Lions settled in to go back up by eight. ESU hit seven threes in the quarter and outscored the Lions, 31-26.

UAFS returned to form defensively in the fourth, holding the Hornets to just 11.8 percent shooting and just five points. The Lions closed the game on a 12-0 run and held the Hornets scoreless for the final 4:57.

Guard Zyniah Thomas led the Lions with 15 points, four rebounds and five assists while guard Morgan Browning added 11 points and four assists. Forward Sofia McNabb was the third Lion in double figures with 10 points off the bench. UAFS had nine players score seven or more points and dished out their second most assists in a game with 20.

UAFS blocked 10 shots in the game, with four from forward Layne Kirkendoll. Kirkendoll also pulled down a team-high 11 rebounds.

Up next for the Lions is a home contest January 30 against Missouri Southern at 5:30 p.m. at the Stubblefield Center.
