LUBBOCK, Texas – Brayden Ross threw a complete-game shutout and Blayse Quarnstrom drove in four runs as University of Arkansas – Fort Smith defeated Angelo State, 5-0, to open the double elimination round of the Lone Star Conference Championship at Hays Field.
Ross threw a season-high 119 pitches for his ninth win and third complete game of the year. It was his second shutout of the season. He struck out three and scattered seven hits.
Angelo threatened with runners in scoring position in each of the first four innings, but Ross was able to shut the door each time.
The Lions broke the scoreless tie in the fifth after Matt Schilling led off the inning and advanced to second on a sac bunt by Ryan Riggs. Quarnstrom then doubled to left center to drive in Schilling before scoring two batters later on a wild pitch after advancing to third on a sac bunt by Jordon Helm.
Ross then stranded the bases loaded in the bottom of the sixth before the Lions added a third run in the seventh. Schilling reached on a one-out double with Riggs then reaching on an infield single to put runners on the corners. Quarnstrom followed up with a sac fly to center for the 3-0 advantage.
The Rams attempted to get a run back on a two-out single to right in the bottom of the seventh, but for the second week in a row, outfielder Michael Brinton showed off his arm to throw the runner out at the plate to preserve the shutout.
Quarnstrom delivered the dagger in the top off the ninth with a two-out blast to right for a 5-0 lead after Riggs battled back from an 0-2 count to draw a walk.
The Lions' bottom of the order did all the damage in the win, with Schilling going 3-for-4 with a double and two runs scored and Quarnstrom finishing 2-for-3 with a homer and four RBIs. Riggs went 1-for-2 with a walk and a run scored.
UAFS will next play at 3 p.m. Friday against the winner of Lubbock Christian and UT Permian Basin.
