Lions score early to win series opener over Cameron

FORT SMITH, Ark. - University of Arkansas - Fort Smith Baseball hit a pair of home runs as the Lions opened their weekend series against Cameron with a 7-5 win at Crowder Field Friday.

Outfielders Brandon Ulmer and Blayse Quarnstrom each hit solo blasts to power the Lions' offense while Devon Chapa turned in six strong innings on the mound for the win.

Chapa worked around three runs in the second and third innings to toss three consecutive scoreless frames, allowing three hits and three walks while striking out five. Jakob Petross worked the final three innings to earn his third save of the year.

UAFS scored first in the bottom half of the opening inning when two runs scored on a Cameron error. After the Aggies took the lead on a home run in the top of the third, the Lions regained the lead for good by scoring four times in the bottom half.

Ulmer led off the frame to tie the game before catcher Nico Patrick put the Lions ahead with a sacrifice fly. Infielder Matt Schilling capped the four-run frame with a two-run single to give UAFS a 6-3 lead.

Quarnstrom then his homer to lead off the sixth to put the Lions up, 7-3.

After five scoreless innings, the Aggies scored two runs after the first three runners reached safely in the ninth before Petross closed the door by retiring the next three batters.

Quarnstrom had two hits on the day for the Lions while Ulmer and infielder Noah Davis each scored twice.

The series continues Saturday with a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.
