Lions off to best start since 2015 with series win over St. Mary's

FORT SMITH, Ark. – Infielder Matt Schilling drove in five runs as University of Arkansas - Fort Smith Baseball defeated St. Mary's, 12-5, Sunday at Crowder Field in the series finale.

With the win, the Lions won the series, 3-1, and are off to their best start since 2015, when they started 9-0.

Schilling put the Lions in front in the bottom of the fifth with a two-run triple to straightaway center, then put the game out of reach in the sixth with a three-run homer to left. He finished the day 3-for-5 with five RBIs and a pair of runs scored.

After falling behind 4-0, infielder Dakota Peters put the Lions on the board in the second with a three-run homer of his own.

Both teams were scoreless in the next two innings before Schilling put the Lions up, 5-4. Prior to Schilling's homer in the sixth, catcher Nico Patrick drove in a run with an RBI single to left. Outfielder Michael Brinton capped the six-run sixth with a two-run single to right.

Patrick finished off the scoring in the seventh with an RBI double down the left field line that put the Lions up, 12-4. Patrick also had three hits on the day with two runs and two driven in. Peters and outfielder Brandon Ulmer each tallied two hits.

Luke Davenport earned the win after having to enter the game in the first inning, pitching five innings and allowing one run on five hits with four strikeouts.

Logan Grant pitched three innings of relief, allowing just an unearned run while Garret Wilson pitched a scoreless ninth inning.

UAFS continues play next February 23-25 at Lubbock Christian.
