FORT SMITH, Ark. - University of Arkansas - Fort Smith Baseball scored six times in the sixth inning to break the game open as the Lions defeated St. Mary's, 10-5, in their home opener at Crowder Field Friday.
After scoring single tallies in three of the first five innings, the Lions answered St. Mary's run in the top of the sixth with six of their own. Outfielder Brandon Ulmer led the inning off with a single before scoring on an RBI double by outfielder Blayse Quarnstrom.
With two outs, the Lions poured it on with a two-run double by outfielder Michael Brinton and an RBI single by catcher Ryan Riggs. The Lions scored their final two runs of the inning on a Rattler error. UAFS scored eight of its 10 runs with two outs.
Ulmer led the Lions at the plate with a 4-for-5 effort with a triple, two runs, an RBI and a stolen base, while Brinton went 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBIs. Quarnstrom finished 2-for-4 with a run and two RBIs.
UAFS has now had at least 13 hits in all five games and scored in double figures in each of the last four, surpassing the previous record of three in 2018.
Lefty Grant Shankle earned his first win of the young season, scattering five hits over 5.1 innings. He allowed one run with six strikeouts. Lukas Petross pitched the final 3.2 innings to earn the save.
UAFS continues the series with the Rattlers at 1 p.m. Saturday with doubleheader action.
