Lions roar past LSC-leading Patriots

FORT SMITH, Ark. - University of Arkansas - Fort Smith Women's Basketball cruised to a 73-47 win over UT Tyler Thursday at Gayle Kaundart Arena at the Stubblefield Center, handing the Patriots their second conference loss.

The Lions held the Patriots to 29.3 percent shooting from the floor and held their starters to just 16 points. Meanwhile, the Lions offense continued its torrid stretch, draining 10-of-21 three pointers and shooting over 50 percent for the third consecutive game.

Guard Riley Hayes led the charge with 17 points on 7-of-8 shooting and went 3-for-4 from beyond the arc. Guard Baylee Fincher tallied 16 points and nine rebounds, while guard Morgan Browning recorded 12 points, eight boards and four dimes.

Tied at 7-7 late in the first quarter, guard Zyniah Thomas drained a pair of free throws and a three to give UAFS a five-point lead as the Lions would never look back, leading for over 35 minutes. Thomas finished with nine points, and five assists.

Fincher drained a three to put the Lions up by as many as 16 late in quarter number two, with the Lions heading into the break with a 36-23 advantage.

UAFS held UT Tyler to 18.8 percent shooting in the third quarter to extend the lead, then shot 75.0 percent in the fourth quarter to tally 26 points. The Lions were 5-for-7 from beyond the arc in the fourth.

The Lions dominated the glass, outrebounding the Patriots, 41-25. Despite having more turnovers, the Lions had a 13-5 edge in fast break points.

Another challenge awaits Saturday, as the Lions take on No. 10 Texas Woman's at 1 p.m. at the Stubblefield Center.
