Women's Basketball to open second half at ranked foe

FORT SMITH, Ark. - University of Arkansas - Fort Smith Women's Basketball will face its first ranked opponent of the season when the Lions visit No. 14Pittsburg State Thursday to resume MIAA play.

The Lions and Gorillas will tip off at 5:30 p.m. on January 2 to ring in the new year and then travel to Missouri Southern for a 1:30 p.m. tip on Saturday.

Both games will be streamed on the MIAA Network with live stats available at uafortsmithlions.com.

NOTES:

FIRST HALF: The Lions wrapped up the first half of their schedule 8-3 overall and 2-0 in MIAA play.

RECORD WATCH: Guard Hannah Boyett needs just 10 points to become the first Lion to score 1,000 points in the NCAA II era. Forward Sinetra Jones ranks sixth with 54 blocks.

DENIED: UAFS leads the MIAA and ranks 11th nationally with 4.82 blocks per game, with both Jones and forward Layne Kirkendoll in the top 10 at 1.5 and 1.3 per game, respectively.

6: The Lions have made at least six threes in seven of their eight wins this season.

SCOUTING PSU: The Gorillas are ranked No. 14 in the latest WBCA Coaches Poll with a record of 10-2, 2-0 MIAA. PSU leads the MIAA in numerous offensive categories, including scoring at 80.5 points per game, led by forward Karenna Gerber at 15.3 points per game. Gerber is one of three Gorillas averaging at least 14 points.

SCOUTING MSSU: The Lions are 10-5, 2-1 MIAA and have won six of their last seven games and 10 of their last 12. Guard Kaitlin Hunnicutt leads MSSU with 13.5 points per game while shooting 35.1 percent from three while center Ryan Franklin is averaging 11.4 points and 7.4 rebounds per game.

THE SERIES: UAFS is 3-4 all-time against Pitt State and 1-1 versus Missouri Southern.
