Defense leads Lions to win over UA-Monticello

WICHITA, Kan. – University of Arkansas – Fort Smith Women's Basketball forced 23 turnovers and collected 18 steals as the Lions defeated UA-Monticello, 77-66, Saturday night.

The Lions turned those turnovers into 18 points and had a 16-7 advantage in fastbreak points.

Tied at 12-12 late in the first quarter, the Lions went on an 8-0 run to close the quarter and never looked back as they led the rest of the game. UAFS then used a 9-1 run in the second quarter as it stretched the lead to as many as 16 on a layup by guard Anna Trusty.

The Lions led 41-28 at the break.

UAM briefly cut the Lions' lead to six in the third, but each time the Lions answered to extend the lead back to double figures. The Lions closed out the game by going 7-for-8 from the charity stripe in the final 1:10.

Four Lions scored in double figures, led by guard Zyniah Thomas with 16 points, five rebounds and five assists. Forward Sinetra Jones added 14 points and nine rebounds, while Trusty and guard Morgan Browning each scored 11 points. Trusty also pulled down nine boards and had four assists and five steals.

Guard Telisha Brown matched Trusty's five steals and added seven points, while guard Olivia Johnson added nine points off the bench.

UAFS had 16 offensive rebounds and scored 18 second chance points.

Up next for the Lions is a road game at Arkansas Tech Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. before hosting the Hampton Inn Classic November 16-17.
