Lions bounce back with win over Newman

WICHITA, Kan. – University of Arkansas – Fort Smith Volleyball rallied from a nine-point deficit in the fourth set to win 27-25 as the Lions took a four-set, 24-26, 25-13, 25-18, 27-25 win over Newman Friday in MIAA action.

The Lions found themselves with a 2-1 set lead but trailing, 20-11, in the fourth set before embarking on an 8-0 run to pull within 20-19. Outside hitter Nyia Anderson tallied two kills during the rally while outside hitter Caelyn Gunn served up a pair of aces.

UAFS then took a 22-21 lead before the Jets answered back for a 25-24 advantage. Three straight errors by the Jets then gave the Lions the set win and the match.

The Jets led set one, 23-17, until the Lions scored six straight points to even the set, getting two aces from setter Scarlette Young and two kills from right-side hitter Morgan Creer. The Jets then scored three of the final four points for the 1-0 lead.

The Lions dominated set two and three, hitting .375 in set two and .452 in set three. Defensively, they held Newman to -.031 hitting in set two.

Anderson led the Lions with 16 kills while hitting .344 and recording a double-double with 11 digs. Middle blocker Kaelyn McDonald added 11 kills on a .474 attack percentage. Creer tallied nine kills while middle blocker Hannah Watkins had eight kills and four blocks.

Setter Trinity Funderburk and Young each dished out 20 assists and recorded double-doubles with 16 and 11 digs, respectively.

Gunn and libero Calista Miller made it five Lions with double figure digs with 10 and 13, respectively. Gunn also had five aces and seven assists.

UAFS plays its final road match of the regular season Saturday at 2 p.m. at Pittsburg State.
