FORT SMITH, Ark. - University of Arkansas - Fort Smith Volleyball dropped a heartbreaker Friday night at the Stubblefield Center, falling in five sets, 25-22, 25-17, 21-25, 23-25, 5-15 to visiting Missouri Southern State.
In the decisive, MSSU hit .667 with eight kills while the Lions were held without a kill and three errors. MSSU scored the first 10 points of the set.
UAFS jumped out to a 2-0 lead for the second consecutive home match, racking up 30 kills in the first two sets. Four Lions finished with double figure kills, led by 12 from outside hitter Nyia Anderson. Outside hitter Caelyn Gunn added 11 kills while middle blocker Brianna Ball and right-side hitter Morgan Creer each had 10.
The Lions led 23-21 in set four after a kill by Anderson, however, MSSU scored the final four points of the set to even the match at two sets apiece.
Setter Brelee Mauldin posted a double-double with 20 assists and a team-high 16 digs, while setter Trinity Funderburk dished out 17 assists. Anderson also recorded a double-double with 15 digs.
Both teams recorded double digit aces, with UAFS tallying 14 and MSSU 11. Anderson led the Lions with four aces while liberos Brooke Rifkin and Taylor Damme each had three.
UAFS next hosts Central Missouri at 1 p.m. at the Stubblefield Center.
