EDMOND, Okla. – University of Arkansas – Fort Smith Volleyball snapped a five-match losing streak in a big way Wednesday evening by taking down No. 10 Central Oklahoma in four sets, 24-26, 25-22, 26-24, 25-23 in MIAA action.
The Lions were dominant at the net, tallying a 15-4 advantage in blocks. Middle blocker Hannah Watkins totaled nine blocks while fellow middle blockers Brianna Ball and Kaelyn McDonald each added five blocks. UAFS forced 33 UCO attack errors for the match.
After UCO rallied from a 22-18 deficit to take the opening set, the Lions quickly bounced back with a 6-0 run in set to for a 15-7 lead. The Lions led by as many as nine in the second set, with UCO trimming the deficit to one before outside hitter Caelyn Gunn closed the set with a pair of kills. Gunn finished the evening with a team-high 17 kills.
The Bronchos held a 12-7 lead in set three until a 7-1 run by the Lions put them up, 18-17. The set was tied five times after that before the Lions broke through with five of the final six points to take a 2-1 set lead.
UAFS carried that momentum into the fourth set, jumping out to an early four-point lead. But the Bronchos wouldn't go away easy, battling back to go ahead, 22-19. UAFS dug deep, scoring six of the final seven points to seal the win, getting three kills from Gunn during the run.
Gunn notched a double-double by adding 16 digs, with setters Scarlette Young and Trinity Funderburk also recording double-doubles. Young tallied 18 assists and 16 digs while Funderburk had 13 assists and 13 digs.
McDonald contributed 10 kills while hitting .333 and outside hitter Nyia Anderson added 14 digs and eight assists. Taylor Damme got her first action as the libero, racking up a team-high 26 digs.
The teams are set to square off again Saturday at the Stubblefield Center at 1 p.m.
