AUSTIN – Six players scored in double figures for University of Arkansas – Fort Smith Men's Basketball Saturday, but the Lions fell, 93-80, in Lone Star Conference action at St. Edward's.
Guard Roland McCoy continued his scoring stretch, leading the Lions with 20 points on 8-of-16 shooting. Forward Ryan Maxwell chipped in with 13 points and five rebounds, while forward Furaha Cadeaux de Dieu had 12 points and five boards off the bench.
Guard Payton Brown tallied 11 points, with guard Cameron Bush and forward Jace Linenberger each had 10 points. Linenberger had five boards, as well.
The Lions trailed 57-54 early in the second half after a 9-2 run got them back in the game, but a 10-3 run by the Hilltoppers stretched the advantage back to double digits.
UAFS started the game with a bang, racing out to a 13-5 lead in the first four minutes. However, an 8-0 run by the Hilltoppers tied the game before Maxwell drained a three to put the Lions back on top.
The teams then traded the lead three more times before a 5-0 run by SEU gave them a 26-22 lead, with UAFS tying it one more time at 28-28. St. Edward's would eventually go into the half up 48-41.
UAFS shot 52.7 percent from the floor and had a 42-28 edge in points in the paint. It tied its season low with only nine turnovers and outscored the Hilltoppers, 13-8, in points off turnovers.
The Lions will next host Midwestern State January 25 as they begin a four-game homestand.
