Lions blast Javelinas for first LSC win

FORT SMITH, Ark. – Guard Roland McCoy continued his strong scoring run as he poured in 25 points as University of Arkansas - Fort Smith Men's Basketball defeated Texas A&M-Kingsville, 85-63, Thursday for its first Lone Star Conference win of the season at Gayle Kaundart Arena at the Stubblefield Center.

UAFS was in control from the start, as McCoy started the game with a three and tallied nine of the Lions' first 12 points. McCoy and guard Payton Brown accounted for all 11 of the Lions' three-point makes, finishing 11-for-19 combined. McCoy was 6-for-10 and Brown 5-for-9. They made eight threes in the first half.

The Lions stretched the lead to double digits by the first media timeout at 19-8 and led by as many as 14 in the first 20 minutes before taking a 44-33 lead into the break.

The lead ballooned to as many as 24 in the final minutes, as the Lions were never challenged in the coast-to-coast win.

McCoy tallied his 25 points on 8-of-14 shooting while also adding five rebounds. Brown added 17 points, while forward Furaha Cadeaux de Dieu recorded 14 points. UAFS had 40 bench points on the night.

UAFS spread the ball around, as the 16 assists were the third most in a game this season. Forward Ryan Maxwell had a team-high five assists with Brown dishing out four.

Guard Cameron Bush had his fingerprints all over the box score, scoring nine points to go with a team-high eight boards, six steals and an assist.

The Lions shot 63.6 percent in the second half and finished at 50.9 percent for the game. It marked the seventh time the Lions have shot better than 50.0 percent in a game this season.

UAFS will look to build off the momentum against Texas A&M International Saturday at 3 p.m.
