FORT SMITH, Ark. - University of Arkansas - Fort Smith Baseball split its doubleheader with Eastern New Mexico Friday at Crowder Field, taking game one of the twin bill, 7-2, before dropping a 5-3 heartbreaker in the nightcap.
The Lions will look to even the series in the finale Saturday at 1 p.m.
UAFS 7, Eastern New Mexico 2
The Lions scored six runs in the fourth inning and received six strong innings from Brayden Johnson on the mound to take the first game of the doubleheader.
After trailing 1-0 through the first three innings, the Lions finally broke through in the fourth after loading the bases with no outs. Infielder Jordon Helm drove in the tying run with a single to left, with the Lions then scoring the final five runs of the inning with two outs.
Blayse Quarnstrom drove in the go-ahead run with a walk prior to a pair of RBI singles by Nico Patrick and Michael Brinton. The singles were sandwiched around a steal by Patrick in which Quarnstrom scored on a throwing error by the shortstop.
ENMU got one run back in the sixth on a wild pitch, but the Lions added an insurance run in the bottom half on a sac fly by Brinton.
The Greyhounds loaded the bases in the seventh with two outs but grounded out to third to end the game.
Johnson picked up his second win of the season after allowing just two runs over six innings on four hits while striking out three. Patrick and Brinton each had two RBIs for the Lions with Patrick collecting two hits.
Eastern New Mexico 5, UAFS 3
The Greyhounds hit a go-ahead two-run homer in the top of the seventh to break a 3-3 tie to split the afternoon.
ENMU took a 3-0 lead in the first, but starter Jakob Petross limited the Greyhounds to just one hit until the seventh inning.
The Lions tied it up when they scored three runs in the fourth, getting an RBI single from Brinton and a two-run single from outfielder Brandon Ulmer. All three hits for the Lions came in the three-run fourth.
UAFS put the tying run on base in the seventh but both runners were left stranded.
Petross pitched all seven innings, allowing five runs on six hits with five punchouts.
