TYLER, Texas – Catcher Kade Brewer provided the only offense for University of Arkansas – Fort Smith Baseball as the Lions dropped the series opener at UT Tyler Friday, 10-2.
Brewer hit a two-run blast in the top of the third to score outfielder Blayse Quarnstrom to pull the Lions within 6-2, but those would be the only two runs on the day for the Lions.
UAFS put two runners on with two outs in the sixth and eighth innings, but both runners were left stranded each time.
The Patriots scored twice in the first and then four times in the second to build a 6-0 lead before the Brewer homer. They also added a pair of runs in the fourth and seventh innings.
Infielders Mason Reynolds and Nico Patrick each finished 2-for-4 at the plate for the Lions.
Starter Lukas Petross allowed eight runs over three innings, while John Toney pitched four innings of relief, surrendering two runs.
The Lions and Patriots continue the series Saturday with a doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m.
