Quarntsrom, Chapa guide Lions to victory in series finale

LAWTON, Okla. – Outfielder Blayse Quarnstrom drove in three runs and pitcher Devon Chapa threw five scoreless innings in relief as University of Arkansas – Fort Smith Baseball defeated Cameron, 9-2, in the series finale Sunday.

The Lions scored in the first inning in all four games on the weekend by scoring twice in the first on Sunday via an RBI single by first baseman Nico Patrick and Quarnstrom scoring on a double play.

Cameron cut the lead in half in the bottom of the first, but the Lions responded in the top of the second with a sac fly by Quarnstrom and then tacked on three more in the third.

UAFS put runners on second and third with no outs in the third when infielder Noah Davis ripped an RBI single through the left side to make it 4-1. Dan Taylor walked with the bases loaded and Quarnstrom delivered once again with a two-run single to center.

The Lions tallied their final runs in the sixth when outfielder Michael Brinton and infielder Matt Schilling scored on a passed ball and wild pitch, respectively.

Schilling finished 3-for-4 at the plate with two runs scored while Davis and catcher Kade Brewer each collected two hits.

Lefty Riley Lowry drew the start on the mound for the Lions, tossing the first four innings and allowing just two runs on five hits with a pair of strikeouts.

Chapa relieved Lowry in the fifth and pitched the remaining five innings, striking out eight and allowing only one single.

UAFS returns home for its final series at Crowder Field April 21-23 against UT Permian Basin.
