LAWTON, Okla. – University of Arkansas – Fort Smith Baseball scored seven runs in the first four innings but was unable to keep the bats going as it dropped the series opener at Cameron Friday, 10-7.
The Lions took advantage of a pair of Aggie mistakes in the first, scoring three times. The first three batters reached, with the Lions scoring their first run on a scoring error. They then added a run on a throwing error before catcher Tanner Callahan drove in the third run with a double.
Cameron got one run back in the first and tied the game with two in the second before the Lions regained the lead when outfielder Michael Brinton reached on a walk and came around the bases on a pair of wild pitches.
The back-and-forth continued as the Aggies scored three times in the bottom of the third, but the Lions once again had an answer by loading the bases with no outs in the fourth. Brinton tied the game with a two-run single before the Lions took back the lead on an error.
But the Aggies tied the game yet again in the bottom half of the inning, then took the lead with three runs in the sixth.
UAFS had just one hit and two baserunners in the final five innings of the game.
Designated hitter Dan Taylor walked three times and scored twice, while outfielder Blayse Quarnstrom also scored twice. Callahan finished 2-for-3 at the plate while Brinton was 1-for-3 with two RBIs and a run scored.
Luke Davenport suffered the loss in relief, while Grant Shankle tossed three scoreless innings to end the game, striking out three and allowing just one hit.
The Lions and Aggies continue the series Saturday with a doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m.
