Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Lions drop close contest at St. Edward's

AUSTIN – University of Arkansas – Fort Smith Women's Basketball had two chances to tie the game at the end of regulation but had a pair of threes rim out as the Lions fell to St. Edward's, 74-71, Thursday in Lone Star Conference action.

Guard Aaliyah Prince paced the Lions with 26 points on 11-of-18 shooting as she returned to the starting lineup. She also had a team-high seven rebounds and two assists. Guard Hannah Boyett and forward Kayla Brundidge each added 10 points.

The Lions scored the first basket of the game, but it would be their only lead of the game as they as St. Edward's scored the next four points. There were three ties in the opening quarter before the Hilltoppers led 20-15 after the first 10 minutes.

St. Edward's got its largest lead at eight points in the second quarter and led the Lions 37-31 at the break.

The Lions cut the deficit to one early in the third, but the Hilltoppers grew the lead back to six. Again, the Lions trimmed the lead to one in the fourth, but the Hilltoppers again had an answer.

Guard Riley Hayes cut the lead to one a third time with 12 seconds left on a pair of free throws, and unable to come up with the steal, the Lions put the Hilltoppers at the foul line for a pair. The Lions then had two chances in the final seconds but were unable to convert the tying bucket.

After making 13 threes in Monday's win, the Lions made just four shots from beyond the arc and shot just 19.0 percent from distance.

UAFS had an 18-9 edge in bench points while SEU had a 36-26 advantage in points in the paint. The Hilltoppers also outscored the Lions 12-1 in fast break points.

The Lions wrap up their road schedule Saturday at St. Mary's at 1 p.m.
