Lions' defense stifles Rattlers in road win

SAN ANTONIO – University of Arkansas – Fort Smith Women's Basketball held St. Mary's to 23.7 percent shooting as the Lions picked up a 49-44 road win at Bill Greehey Arena Saturday.

The Lions held the Rattlers without a made three until the fourth quarter and also forced 18 turnovers. The 44 points are the fewest allowed this season.

UAFS started fast, leading by seven in the first quarter. St. Mary's battled back to tie the game at 18-18, but the Lions quickly regained the lead and took a 26-23 lead into the locker room.

The Lions ad their largest lead of the game in the third quarter at eight points, starting the half on a 5-0 run. The Rattlers went on an 8-2 run to cut the lead to 33-31, but guard Hannah Boyett drained a triple to put the Lions back up by two possessions.

St. Marys' tied the game early in the fourth and then took its first lead since the first quarter with 6:18 remaining. Four points by guard Aaliyah Prince put the Lions back in front, and then Prince followed with another basket to put UAFS up five with 34 seconds left.

After numerous reviews in the final minute, the Lions got the stops they needed to come away with the win.

Prince led the Lions with 17 points, five rebounds, a block and a steal. Boyett and forward Kayla Brundidge added nine points, with Brundidge pulling down 11 rebounds and grabbing three steals, as well. Guard Riley Hayes contributed eight points and seven rebounds.

St. Mary's outrebounded the Lions, 51-39, but the Lions defense thwarted many of the Rattlers' second chance opportunities.
