FORT SMITH, Ark. – Guard Hannah Boyett broke the program record for career made threes Monday by knocking down six triples in the first half en route to a game high 24 points in a 76-65 win over Texas A&M International at Gayle Kaundart Arena at the Stubblefield Center.
Boyett now sits at 153 career made threes after breaking the record of 151 previously held by Sydney Franklin.
The first quarter was a back-and-forth affair for the first seven minutes until the Lions took the lead for good on back-to-back jumpers by guard Aaliyah Prince and forward Kayla Brundidge. Boyett would close the quarter with a three for a 20-15 UAFS lead.
UAFS broke the game open in the second quarter, shooting 7-for-8 from three and 66.7 percent overall as it outscored the Dustdevils, 25-9. Leading 22-17, the next five made baskets were all from beyond the arc – two from guard Riley Hayes and three from Boyett – including the record breaker. The Lions led 45-24 at the break.
The lead grew to as many as 22 in the third quarter, but the Dustdevils used a 13-4 run to cut the lead to 13. The lead shrunk to single digits early in the fourth, but two more threes by Hayes kept TAMIU at bay.
Hayes and Boyett combined for 10 of the 13 made threes for the Lions, with guard Rodrea Echols going 2-for-2 from distance.
Brundidge pulled down a career high 13 rebounds, as the Lions won the battle on the boards, 42-33. Brundidge had eight of the Lions' 15 offensive rebounds as they tallied nine second chance points.
Hayes finished with 16 points for the Lions while Brundidge added eight. Guard Nya Stewart scored seven, with both Prince and Echols scoring six. Forward Sinetra Jones added five points and seven rebounds. Prince also dished out seven assists.
The Lions embark on their final road trip of the regular season this week, starting with a visit to St. Edward's Thursday at 5:30 p.m.
