ARKADELPHIA, Ark. – Shortstop Matt Schilling went 3-for-3 at the plate at University of Arkansas - Fort Smith Baseball went 2-0 at the Dugan Invitational following a 10-3 win at Ouachita Baptist Saturday.
Schilling capped his day with a three-run homer in the top of the ninth to give the Lions some insurance runs.
Ouachita scored twice in the second off starter Brayden Ross, but the Lions answered with three runs in the third. Dan Taylor tied the game with a two-run double then came around to score on an RBI single by catcher Junior Torres.
The Tigers quickly tied the game at 3-3 in the bottom half of the inning, but that would be the final run the UAFS bullpen would allow.
UAFS took the lead in the fifth on an RBI single by Tanner Callahan and extended the lead in the sixth on an RBI single by outfielder Michael Brinton and a sac fly by catcher Nico Patrick. Callahan picked up two hits on the afternoon.
Both bullpens kept the game in check until the ninth, when the Lions scored four runs highlighted by the Schilling homer.
Lefty Grant Shankle earned the win in relief, tossing 2.1 scoreless innings. The bullpen finished with just one run allowed on four hits over 7.2 innings with six strikeouts.
The Lions are set to face Oklahoma Christian in its home opening series February 10-12 at Crowder Field.
