FORT SMITH, Ark. - University of Arkansas - Fort Smith Women's Basketball overcame a double digit first quarter deficit to defeat Eastern New Mexico, 75-62, Saturday at Gayle Kaundart Arena at the Stubblefield Center.
Eastern New Mexico shot 62.5 percent in the first quarter and used a 15-0 run to turn an early 6-2 UAFS lead into a 17-6 advantage for the Greyhounds. ENMU finished the quarter leading 25-13.
The momentum then drastically swung the way of the Lions in the second and third quarters, as the Lions outscored the Greyhounds, 42-20. UAFS closed the gap to four early in the second on a 7-0 run and pulled within 36-34 at the half after a pair of free throws by forward Dala Allen.
UAFS took its first lead since the opening minutes on a three by guard Hannah Boyett on the first possession of the third quarter. After trading the lead for the next two minutes, the Lions went on another 7-0 run, started by a three by guard Riley Hayes and capped by a pair of baskets by guard Aaliyah Prince.
The Lions grew the lead to double digits by the end of the third quarter and led by as many as 14 in the fourth. UAFS was never threatened the rest of the way en route to its third straight win.
UAFS held ENMU to 23.5 percent shooting in the second quarter and shot 61.5 percent in the third quarter.
Hayes led the Lions with 20 points on 6-of-12 shooting from beyond the arc while also dishing out three assists and nabbing two steals. Prince tallied 19 points on 9-of-17 from the field to go with three assists and three steals. Forward Kayla Brundidge added eight points and eight rebounds.
The Lions doubled the Greyhounds in bench points and won the battle on the boards, 45-40.
UAFS will close out the season Thursday at 5:30 p.m. against Oklahoma Christian at the Stubblefield Center.
