RICHARDSON, Texas – The Lone Star Conference announced its preseason women's basketball poll and players to watch Monday, as voted on the by the league's head coaches, media and sports information directors.
UAFS was picked 14th in the poll with 202 points while guard Riley Hayes was named to the LSC Preseason Players to Watch list.
Angelo State was selected as the preseason favorite, receiving 15 first-place votes and 652 total points. Texas Woman's was second after tallying 17 first-place votes and 633 points. UT Tyler received nine first-place votes and 627 points with Lubbock Christian garnering the final three first-place votes and 606 points. West Texas A&M was fifth with 524 points.
Texas A&M-Kingsville (492), St. Edward's (379), Cameron (311), Oklahoma Christian (270) and UT Permian Basin (270) completed the top 10.
Hayes averaged 9.0 points per game last season and shot 34.9 percent from the three-point line. Her 2.4 made threes per game ranked second in the league.
LSC women's basketball teams open their 2023-24 schedules in tournament or single-game play during early November weekends. Nine teams start seasons at D2CCA or Canadian Tipoff Classics beginning November 3, three teams play in South Central Region Challenges November 10, and another hosts a tournament November 10. The new season for three remaining LSC women's teams starts with single games in one of the two weekends.
The 42nd Lone Star Conference women's basketball championship tournament is scheduled March 7-10, 2024, played at the Comerica Center in Frisco, Texas. The eight-team bracket includes the East and West Division winners, who automatically receive berths, with the remaining qualifying teams and all seeds based on results versus all LSC teams. The Division II Women's Basketball Championship starts with regionals March 15-19 and the Elite Eight March 25-29 in St. Joseph, Mo.
